Day 4 – Hakone Owakudani
Owakudani, is an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fume, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced. Occasionally, Owakudani has good views of Mount Fuji on clear days. There are number of steam vents and bubbling pools at the volcanic zone. Here, you can purchase eggs, cooked in the naturally hot water, whose shells are blackened by the sulfur.
As you can read in the 3rd photo, this area was once covered with tall trees, but now, you can only find species that are able to survive Volcanic eruption.
|Important NoticeIt is currently not possible to visit Owakudani! Due to increased seismic activity that could lead to a minor volcanic eruption, a no-entry zone was established on May 6, 2015 around Owakudani, resulting in the closure of the ropeway and access road to Owakudani and the closure of hiking trails around Owakudani. The rest of Hakone is not affected.
We then took the Japan bullet train from Nagoya to Shin-Osaka.
